US stocks advance after nonfarm payrolls, end the week higher
FXStreet (Córdoba) - US stocks rose sharply on Friday, with three main indexes rising more than 1.0% on the day and closing with weekly gains, following the US nonfarm payrolls report.
The US economy added 223,000 new jobs in April, slightly below the 224,000 expected. The unemployment rate edged down to 5.4% in April from 5.5%. However, March figures were revised down, showing a 85,000 job gain from 126,000 previously estimated.
The DJIA rose 267 points or 1.49% to 18,191 and ended the week 0.9% higher. The S&P 500 climbed 28 points or 1.35% to 2,116 and finished the week 0.4% higher. The Nasdaq gained 58 points or 1.17& to 5,003 and closed the week virtually unchanged.
